A few weeks ago, I had a conversation about failures and new beginnings. Many people agreed that the most admirable individuals are those who can start from scratch and achieve success after facing challenges.<\/p>

So, they were surprised when I said that I don\u2019t think we ever truly start from scratch – even if it feels that way.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tIn my opinion, in almost every new situation, there will always be something familiar, where we can apply at least part of our previous experience or knowledge.\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

When I opened my travel agency, I had no prior experience as a company director. I had never managed a company, written a business plan, or interviewed employees before.<\/p>\n

I also didn\u2019t bring over any partners or clients from my previous employer because I felt that would be unfair and unprofessional.<\/p>\n

So, you could say I was starting from scratch.<\/p>\n

BUT<\/strong><\/p>\n

I already knew how to build quality partnerships, and I used this experience in my new company.<\/p>\n

I knew how I envisioned our services, how we could retain customers, and I brought a lot of my own ideas.<\/p>\n

I knew what my strengths are and how I could achieve results through them.<\/p>\n

And I had my curiosity, which helped me ask the right questions\u2014the ones that needed to be asked in order to build what I wanted to build.<\/p>\n

I was able to use a lot of the experience and knowledge I had collected earlier and integrated these into the new situation.  <\/p>\n

So, when you look at it carefully, you\u2019re not really starting from scratch. (At least, I can\u2019t think of any situation right now where this would be true.)<\/p>\n

You might be building a new<\/strong> business.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You might have a new role <\/strong>in a completely different field.<\/p>\n

You might be the newly appointed team leader<\/strong> of a team you\u2019ve worked with for years.<\/p>\n

You might be dreaming about a new career <\/strong>but afraid to take the leap.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tBut you\u2019re not starting from zero. \t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

You\u2019re actually taking with you: <\/strong><\/p>

  • Years of experience.<\/li>
  • Loads of knowledge.<\/li>
  • Numerous skills and strengths that have already helped you achieve results.<\/li>
  • Many ideas.<\/li>
  • Your creativity, passion, responsibility and attention.<\/li>
  • Your resilience and problem-solving skills.<\/li>
  • The lessons learned from past successes – and failures.<\/li>
  • Your unique way of thinking and approaching challenges.<\/li>
  • The relationships and networks you\u2019ve built along the way (unless like me, you choose not to).<\/li><\/ul>

    And probably a thousand other things.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    \n\t\t\t\t\t
    \n\t\t\t
    \n\t\t\t\t\t\t
    \n\t\t\t\t
    \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
    \n\t\t\t

    \n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to recognize everything you\u2019re bringing with you\u2014all the things you can build on in a new environment or situation.\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    \n\t\t\t\t\t\t
    \n\t\t\t\t\t
    \n\t\t\t
    \n\t\t\t\t\t\t
    \n\t\t\t\t
    \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

    So, you see, you\u2019re not starting from scratch.<\/p>

    And sometimes, the biggest challenge is seeing that for yourself.<\/p>

    As Bill Gates put it, \u201cEveryone needs a coach. One thing people are never good at is seeing themselves as others see them.\u201d<\/em>

    Because a coach is someone who can reflect back to you what others see\u2014your strengths, your potential, and the value you bring.<\/p>

    So, before you convince yourself that you\u2019re at square one, take a moment to reflect:<\/p>

    • What past experiences can you integrate into your present?<\/strong><\/li>
    • What skills and strengths do you already have that can help you move forward?<\/strong><\/li>
    • What do you already know that you\u2019re not giving yourself enough credit for?<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>
